Ashley Brewer marries Frank Kaminsky in Mexico one week after ESPN layoff

NBA center Frank Kaminsky and former “SportsCenter” anchor Ashley Brewer celebrated their wedding with a ceremony in Los Cabos, Mexico, on Friday.

Though the pair were legally married in April at a Los Angeles courthouse, according to the Wisconsin State-Journal, they celebrated their nuptials again across the southern border.

The latest ceremony in front of friends and family came just a week after Brewer was one of ESPN’s layoffs.

The couple met in 2017, and after their careers took them to different spots in the country with Kaminsky playing professionally and Brewer working in sports media, Kaminsky proposed to Brewer in Maui last summer, according to the State-Journal.

Brewer, who swam collegiately at Texas and USC, was let go at ESPN after three years at the network.

ESPN also laid off Jeff Van Gundy, Max Kellerman, Suzy Kolber, Jalen Rose, among others, though for Brewer, the network’s decision occurred a week ahead of her wedding.

It was an overlap that she documented in a TikTok, where she wrote, “When ESPN lays you off the week before your wedding.”

Still, Brewer thanked ESPN and wrote on Twitter that she “learned and grew so much as a broadcaster and person.”

“I will really miss all of the wonderful friends I made along the way,” she added.

Kaminsky, who remains an NBA free agent, was selected No. 9 overall in the draft by the Hornets in 2015 following a collegiate career at Wisconsin, where the Badgers lost to Duke in the national title his senior season.

He was named the Naismith College Player of the Year by the Associated Press that season.

The 7-foot center spent his first four seasons in Charlotte before joining the Suns for three years and then splitting time between the Hawks and Rockets in 2022-23.

In 36 combined games between Atlanta and Houston, Kaminsky averaged 2.5 points and 1.4 rebounds per game while logging under seven minutes per game with both teams.

He’s never started more than 16 games in a season across his career, which has included plenty of missed time due to injuries.

While he continues to search for his next playing opportunity, though, and as the rest of the NBA enjoyed its offseason and newcomers tried to make strong first impressions at the NBA Summer League, Kaminsky married Brewer, who he told the State-Journal last month has been the “best person I’ve ever met.”

“She lets me be my goofy, idiotic self and doesn’t judge me for it,” Kaminsky told the State-Journal. “You need someone who lets you be yourself and doesn’t try to change you.
