Bill Maher joins forces with PETA on new activist docuseries

Controversial talk show host Bill Maher is combining forces with PETA on a new docuseries.

Called “The Failed Experiment,” the six-part show will pull back the curtain on the multibillion-dollar animal testing industry, while seeking to explain why the US has found few cures for widespread diseases such as Alzheimer’s and ALS, according to a Deadline report.

“Failed Experiment,” which Maher is producing, will premiere Jan. 9 on Amazon Prime.

“We’ve all lost loved ones to diseases, but did you ever wonder why there are so few cures?” Maher told the trade. “’The Failed Experiment’ dismantles America’s archaic research program and exposes the bias that is preventing progress.”

This isn’t 67-year-old Maher’s first rodeo with the activist group. He is an honorary director of PETA, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The “Real Time” host has been an outspoken animal rights advocate and defender of PETA for years.

In a video PSA for the group, he admonished “hipster douches” for wearing Canada Goose.

“New rule: No more douches,” he said in the clip. “I mean the hipster douches who piss away $1,000 on a Canada Goose parka and the hipsterazzi who max out their credit cards to look like them.”

Maher continued: “See, what they don’t realize — or may not care about — is that Canada Goose trims its coats with the fur of coyotes who’ve been crushed and mangled in steel traps so painful and indiscriminate that they’ve been outlawed in over 85 countries.”

And in a guest column for the Hollywood Reporter, he explained why he’s a PETA board member.

“Being on PETA’s board is a perfect fit for me because PETA takes on the status quo and challenges conventional thinking,” Maher said. “I push the envelope because the envelope needs pushing, so I love that PETA doesn’t tiptoe over the line — they jump over it with both feet.”

Maher also made headlines recently when he addressed the Israel-Palestine war on “Real Time.”

“The Palestinian people should know, your leaders, and the useful idiots on college campuses who are their allies, are not doing you any favors by keeping alive the ‘River to the Sea’ myth,” he said.

Of Israel, Maher, who is Jewish but an atheist, added, “They’re here, they like their bagel with schmear, get used to it.”
