Brittany Mahomes wasn’t ready to be ‘thrown into the fire’ of NFL fame

Patrick Mahomes’ rapid rise to fame even caught his wife, Brittany Mahomes, by surprise.

The KC Current co-owner discussed how she was affected by the attention NFL stardom brought on during a joint interview with “CBS Mornings,” which aired Monday morning on CBS.

“I was not prepared for this,” Brittany told Nate Burleson, laughing. “And at such a young age. We were in love and I loved him with all of my heart.

“But, you know, I didn’t expect it to skyrocket this soon, and us kind of just being thrown into the fire like this.”

When asked if she had a “welcome-to-the-NFL” moment, Brittany recalled the time when she sprayed Chiefs fans with champagne from her private suite at Arrowhead Stadium after Kansas City’s thrilling AFC Divisional Round win against the Bills in January 2022.

“When I started posting on Instagram me screaming and getting rowdy in the suite,” Brittany told Burleson while CBS played the video of her showering fans with champagne. “I think the first time I did that it got blown up — and it’s like, ‘She’s crazy, this is too much.’

“I ultimately learned that you don’t have to share everything that you do in your life.”

The fitness entrepreneur received backlash for the now-viral champagne incident, and later tweeted: “I just wish I could do what I want without getting attacked every week.”

Brittany also addressed the situation in a separate post on her Instagram Story at the time, sharing that she and her team created “Team Brittany” shirts and were going to donate the proceeds to a local Kansas City anti-bullying charity.

Elsewhere during the interview, the couple discussed the new Netflix docu-series, “Quarterback,” which follows the high school sweethearts, both 27, on and off the field throughout the entire 2022 season — along with Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins and former Falcons signal-caller Marcus Mariota, who is now with the Eagles.

In the series premiere last week, Mahomes explained that he was in the friend zones before the couple got together as teenagers.

“I truly mean this when I say, I think if I didn’t have Brittany, I wouldn’t be in the position I am now,” Mahomes told Burleson.

The reigning Super Bowl MVP explained how fatherhood has benefitted him on the field.

“You enjoy the moments,” Mahomes said. “Being able to go home and see my daughter [Sterling Skye, 2] and see my son, [6-month-old “Bronze” Lavon III] I have a better understanding of being present and enjoying it. That translates to the football field.

“And we’ve been on a heck of a run. But I’m trying to enjoy those moments, ’cause I know it doesn’t last forever, even though we want it to.’”
