The cat’s out of the bag — and in their house.
Police received a call about a burglary in a woman’s home — only to later discover it wasn’t a human but, in fact, her neighbor’s kitty.
Noemi Zonta swore a burglar broke into her apartment in Koper, Slovenia when she returned home to discover it trashed.
Drawers and cupboards were flung open in the kitchen and the whole house was in ruins. She even found urine on her bed.
The distraught 24-year-old later found the kitty culprit in her wardrobe following a two-hour investigation by law enforcement. Somehow, her neighbor’s frisky feline had gotten loose and found its way into Zonta’s home.
When it was unable to find an escape route, it destroyed Zonta’s house.
“My partner and I live in a big house and we have three apartments,” she told SWNS. “We live in one of them, we rent the second one and the third one is currently empty, my family sometimes use it for the weekend.”
Her brother swung by the trashed home to find the disaster, asking Zonta if she and her partner had been living there.
“We went to check the apartment immediately and we were 100% sure that someone broke in,” she continued. “The kitchen was a mess, all bottles and glasses were flipped over, there was urine on the bed sheets and all drawers were open.”
The pair immediately contacted the police about the mysterious incident, realizing there were no broken windows or doors nor any missing items.
“We didn’t want to touch anything because we wanted to leave the crime scene untouched,” she added. “Investigators took urine samples and checked footprints.”
The urine sample results showed the waste belonged to a cat, but it still left the couple stumped since they don’t own a cat.
“[Eventually] one of the investigators opened a closet in the bedroom and there was a cute, scared cat lying inside on a pile of bed covers,” she recalled. “So the burglar was actually a cat who went inside and couldn’t get out.”
The puzzled police department was shocked to find the scared kitten, saying they had never come across a situation quite like that.
“It turns out that my dad went inside an empty apartment on Saturday to get the keys to the basement and the cat sneaked in,” she added. “Of course, he didn’t notice it and he locked the door.”
For four days, they found out, the cat had been trapped inside the house. Luckily, it wasn’t harmed and was later returned to its owner, who had been searching for the feline.
“The poor cat was trapped inside for almost four days, made a mess in an apartment,” she said, “and scared all of us.”
