Elton John’s eye problems have gone from bad to worse.
At Sunday night’s charity gala premiere of his production “The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical,” the 77-year-old musician revealed that he’s lost his eyesight after developing an infection.
“As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight,” John said to the audience while onstage at the Dominion Theatre, according to the Daily Mail.
“I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed listening to it,” the EGOT winner added.
John was joined on stage by the cast of the musical, as well as his husband, David Furnish, who reportedly helped John get down from the stage.
Thanking Furnish, 62, during his speech, John said, “To my husband, who’s been my rock, because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because as you know, I’ve lost my eyesight, so it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it.”
“And, boy, it sounded good tonight!” John added. “Okay, thank you for coming!”
John wrote the score for “The Devil Wears Prada,” which failed to make a splash during its Chicago tryout in 2022. The Post’s theater critic Johnny Oleksinski called the musical “a haute mess” at the time.
The West End production opened on October 24. Vanessa Williams stars in the lead role as Miranda Priestly.
The charity event on Sunday was in support of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Lily Collins, Elizabeth Hurley, Donatella Versace and Anna Wintour were among the stars at the gala.
John has been open about his challenges with his vision over the last few months.
In September, he revealed on Instagram that he was battling a serious optic infection that left him with “limited vision” in one of his eyes.
“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” John said.
During a “Good Morning America” interview last month, the “Rocket Man” singer said that he could no longer see out of his right eye.
“I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the South of France,” he explained to Robin Roberts. “It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see. My left eye is not the greatest.”
“There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK,” John went on, “but I’m kind of stuck in the moment, because I can do something like this, but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know. Because I can’t see a lyric for start.”
The music superstar added, “It kind of floored me, and I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.”
John has also been struggling in his professional life. His $25 million Broadway show “Tammy Faye” announced its closing date only five days after opening night. The show will take its final bow on Dec. 8.
