Former Wimbledon champ Garbiñe Muguruza marrying fan she randomly met in NYC

The love story that began with a chance Central Park encounter continues with an exciting engagement.

Former French Open and Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza recently announced she and her boyfriend, Arthur Borges, are getting hitched — nearly two years after the model approached the 29-year-old athlete in New York around the time of the 2021 U.S. Open.

“My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk,” the tennis star recalled to American media, according to The Sun.

“I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says, ‘Good luck at the U.S. Open.’ I was left thinking, ‘Wow, he’s so handsome.’”

The twosome continued to meet up and regularly strolled through Central Park, The Sun reports.

Muguruza, a former world No. 1, revealed that Borges popped the question this month.

“You had me at ‘Hello,’” she posted on Instagram, geotagging the dreamy proposal from Marbella, Spain.

Muguruza, who has shared snippets of her and Borges’ relationship on social media over the years, spoke to the Spanish-language publication ¡Hola! about what the couple’s future nuptials may look like.

“We would like it to be next year, in the summer, near the beach and in Spain, because it is the place that most unites us,” she said.

Muguruza, who hails from Venezuela, is a two-time Grand Slam champion, winning the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017.

She reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open in 2017 and 2021.

Murguruza has been on a hiatus from tennis, telling fans in April she is “going to lengthen this period till summer,” according to Tennis.com.
