Almost half of Americans have started a side hustle to earn a little extra cash amid the ongoing economic squeeze — but one woman is raking in a serious fortune with her crafty outside-of-hours venture.
Vanessa Garcia nets up to $9,000 per month — more than double the average annual U.S. salary — by offering a variety of services on TaskRabbit.
The Los Angeles-based entertainer, 29, joined the odd-job service site back in 2017, saying it allowed her to work flexible hours between her singing and acting gigs.
“I thought it was amazing that you could get paid to put together IKEA furniture,” Garcia told Go Banking Rates, saying she had no idea that there was a breadth of other jobs to be performed through the app.
“Once I signed up for TaskRabbit, I found out you could do a lot more — everything from personal assistant work to event planning and staffing,” she declared.
Now netting six figures per year from the site, Garcia is offering tips to others thinking about joining the site — and she says you’ll also be able to earn eye-popping amounts if you play your cards right.
“I offer 25 different skills on the app,” Garcia said, saying people should cast a wide net if they’re looking at making a pretty penny via the site. “These range from personal assistant work to project coordination/management to organization to furniture assembly, event staffing, and entertainment.”
But don’t worry if you’re not an expert at everything — Garcia says you simply need to be transparent with your customer.
“If there was something I wasn’t 100% about, I’d do my research and make sure I could accomplish whatever task was asked of me,” she stated.
If you’re not an immediate expert, Garcia recommends setting your hourly rate low, before building it up over time as you gain expertise in the task at hand.
“In regards to setting your own rates, I recommend new Taskers start at $20 per hour, at the minimum, because if you set your rate higher without having ratings or reviews, that’s when it becomes a little bit harder to get hired,” Garcia advised.
After seven years on the app, Garcia can now charge up to $100 per hour for a task, thanks to customers’ stellar ratings and reviews.
The TaskRabbit side hustle has even surpassed Garcia’s main jobs in the entertainment industry to become her primary source of income.
“I think ‘word of mouth’ is very important,” Garcia declared. “Doing a phenomenal job for my clients has led me to getting referred to other clients.”
