Good things come to those who wait — even if it takes several decades.
Retired chef and grandma Andrea Murray revealed that her longtime partner, Graham Martin, finally asked her to marry him after being together for 35 years.
Murray, 60, told South Western News Service that she was utterly taken aback by her long-term beau’s proposal in February.
“I nearly had a fit I was so surprised when he proposed,” gushed Murray who added that despite being together since 1988, Martin, 56, had staunchly refused to get married.”
It was a truly wonderful and so unexpected proposal. I have to keep pinching myself.”
According to Murray, the UK-based love birds were on a beach in Scotland when the stock controller got down on one knee and asked her to be his bride.
“I thought we were going to look at a caravan then he just got down on one knee,” recalled Murray. “It was so romantic and special – it really blew me away.”
The bride-to-be said that Martin had asked her 88-year-old father, Andrew Murray, for his permission before the proposal.
“It’s good to know romance is still alive,” she said with a laugh, adding that even though the pair agreed 28 years ago that they would be together forever, she had long been desperate to walk down the aisle.
“I’ve hinted at marriage for years, and so did my friends,” said Murray. “Then we just gave up.”
Martin had maintained throughout their relationship that their commitment to each was strong enough and that they didn’t need to be officially wed.
However, her groom-to-be ultimately had a change of heart.
“All Graham’s friends were so shocked,” laughed Murray. “They all asked if he was ill.”
The happy couple said that they plan to hold a ceremony at the hotel Murray had previously worked at in September while stating all their children and grandchildren will be a part of the wedding.
Murray also confirmed that her father will “happily” walk her down the aisle.
“I’m so excited to make our commitment to each other in front of all our family and friends,” smiled Murray. “Marriage is the icing on the cake for me.”
