Minnie Driver knows her relationship with Josh Brolin was never meant to be.
The “Good Will Hunting” actress, 54, said in an interview published this weekend that she’s glad she didn’t end up marrying her ex-fiancé.
“The one time I was engaged, it would have been, I think, the biggest mistake of my life,” she told The Sunday Times.
Driver and Brolin, 56, fell in love on the set of the 2000 film “Slow Burn.”
They were engaged for 6 months before announcing their breakup in October 2001.
“Minnie Driver and Josh Brolin have decided to cancel their wedding plans. Their decision is mutual and amicable,” a statement from Driver’s publicist read.
In her interview with The Sunday Times, Driver said her parents never married due to her dad’s infidelities, which affected her own romantic relationships.
“If I look at my history, what it did was make me want to be married so much and then choose men who were so not the right men to be married to,” she said.
“So I would carry on longing to be married and to have that conservative version [of a relationship], find men who had no interest in that, and then if one did, run a mile.”
Driver has been in a relationship with writer and director Addison O’Dea since 2019.
“Now I’m with someone who doesn’t want to get married but who is the most devoted, loving, extraordinary…. Everything I could have wanted in my childhood idea of a husband, he actually is,” she said.
Before her relationship with Brolin, the “Ella Enchanted” star dated Matt Damon after they met on the set of “Good Will Hunting” in the 1990s.
Their romance ended just shortly before the 1998 Academy Awards, and Damon, 53, brought his new girlfriend to the ceremony.
Damon famously announced his breakup with Driver on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” that year.
“I was with Minnie for a while, but we’re not really romantically involved anymore. We’re just really good friends, and I love her dearly … I care about her a lot,” he said. “We care about each other a lot. It wasn’t meant to be, you know? And if it’s not meant to be, then it’s not meant to be.”
In 2022, Driver reflected on the split in an interview with Entertainment Tonight and said the ordeal caused “agony” in her life.
“It’s so tricky, because it’s not deliberate, he couldn’t have helped how famous he became and how his life was being picked over, in the same way that mine was,” she said.
Both of Driver’s famous exes moved on from their respective splits.
Damon married Luciana Barroso in 2005 and the couple share three daughters.
Brolin married Diane Lane in 2004, but they got divorced in 2013. He’s been married to Kathryn Boyd since 2016, and they have to two children together.
