Netflix kills ad-free option for new American subscribers

They’re ad-ing — and subtracting.

Netflix has eliminated its “Basic” subscription plan in the United States and the United Kingdom, according to reports.

Currently offered for $9.99 with no ads, new subscribers will find themselves coughing up considerably more dough — nearly $16 — for the cheapest commercial-free option.

The move comes as the streamer finds itself in heated competition with other providers like Max, Hulu and Apple TV+.

It is only the latest plot twist for the platform’s 232 million subscribers, who recently received unwelcome news of a crackdown on password sharing, which led to a huge subscription spike — presumably as freeloaders found themselves locked out.

Unlike other services, Netflix did not show commercials until late 2022, when it began trialing an ad-supported plan. A recent report stated that just 5 million users had signed up for the option globally.

The switcheroo is the latest reminder of the dramatic gap between critical success, awards-season accolades and financial viability on the fast-changing entertainment landscape, where a growing number of competing services are being forced to remain nimble to stay alive.

For new subscribers, an entry-level Netflix subscription, or “Standard with ads,” will be offered for $6.99 per month.

But if you would rather watch “Bridgerton” without hearing about 75 side effects in a prescription drug commercial, the “Standard” plan has a new rate of $15.49/month.

And if you’re on the Basic plan already and you’re just waiting to hear how this will affect you — never fear. Those who already have an active subscription with the Basic tier can pay their $9.99/month in peace — for the time being.
