NFL makes Al Michaels walk back ‘TNF’ statement after Vikings flub

Prime Video play-by-play announcer Al Michaels said he had to clean up his on-air “mess” after being confronted by the NFL during Thursday night’s game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

During the third quarter — with Vikings kicker Will Reichard going for three points as Minnesota trailed the Chargers, 24-3 — Michaels explained that the NFL “wanted to take my lunch away” because he said earlier that Reichard’s only missed field goal this year was in Week 5 against the Browns in London, where the ball appeared to hit a SkyCam wire at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Vikings beat the Browns, 21-17, in that game.

“Because I said before that Reichard’s only miss was hitting a wire in London, the league says, ‘No, no, it was an optical illusion,’” Michaels said. “Not what Reichard thinks.

“Anyway, there you have it. We cleaned it up. Always cleaning up our mess. My mess.”

Reichard entered Week 5 with a perfect 8-for-8 record on field goal attempts.

The kicker and the Vikings requested that the league remove his missed field goal from the official record books due to the interference, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz — who said the NFL acknowledged it was a missed call, but ruled that it would not make the statistical adjustment.

Michaels made the correction at the NFL’s request in the second half as Reichard missed his second official kick during Thursday’s game, a 53-yard field goal attempt to close out the first half.

The Vikings lost to the Chargers, 37-10.
