Perennially underused March Madness voice offers rare example of quality broadcasting

There are exceptions to most every rule. As long as they’re exceptional.

For all my whining about game-casters who talk too much, there are two who would only minimize their value if they chose — or were able — to speak less.

One was now-retired hockey play-by-player Doc Emrick whose charm, knowledge, wordsmanship and overall presence could sustain our presence throughout blowouts. I’d have insisted that he EX-pire before he RE-tire.

The other is the perennially underused and unappreciated ex-Division I coach Steve Lappas, who is such a natural at keeping our eyes, ears and minds on games that he stands out among those shorted by network production execs in favor of those who qualify for every reason — race, gender, name recognition — except their value to viewers.
