Pink ‘eternal’ diamond to fetch $35M at auction: ‘Rarer than a Magritte’

They say diamonds are forever, but this one is literally “eternal.”

Sotheby’s is auctioning off an extremely coveted, colorful gem that’s been billed as “The Eternal Pink” as it is one of the most stunning diamonds in the world.

“At 10.57 carats, the cushion-cut Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Purplish Pink Diamond is the most vivid pink diamond ever to come to market,” according to the auctioneers.

In Sotheby’s words, it is “the most significant pink diamond to ever appear at auction.”

The eternal can be yours for the modest estimate of $35 million or higher come June 8 during the Magnificent Jewels auction in the Big Apple.

The Eternal Pink also challenges the price per carat record for any diamond or gemstone sold at auction. The Williamson Pink Star, a dazzling 11.15-carat Fancy Vivid Pink Internally Flawless diamond, had been sold by Sotheby’s Hong Kong last October for $5,178,124 per carat, reported Women’s Wear Daily.

The Eternal Pink diamond may set records at auction.

“The Eternal Pink’s immense presence and great rarity make it comparable to ultimate masterpieces of art — far rarer than a Magritte or a Warhol. Combined with its exceptional clarity, it is not surprising that it would command the highest per-carat pre-sale estimate for any diamond to date,” Quig Bruning, head of Sotheby’s Jewelry, Americas, said in a statement to WWD.

“This color is the most beautiful and concentrated shade of pink in diamonds that I have ever seen or has ever come to market.”

It will first be displayed on April 7th in Hong Kong before beginning its worldwide tour to destinations like Dubai, Singapore, Shanghai, Taiwan and Geneva.

The Eternal Pink rough cut — mined out of Botswana, Africa — was 23.78 carats and “was meticulously fashioned into an exquisite cushion cut” over a six month span.

Its slow process was all for “maximizing the diamond’s electric “bubblegum” color to full potential.”
