Queen Elizabeth prepared cake for Lili’s first birthday — but Harry, Meghan were no-shows: ex-staffer

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle seemingly abandoned the late Queen Elizabeth last year when it came to celebrate their daughter Lilibet Diana’s first birthday.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex jetted across the pond from their California abode last June to attend the monarch’s Platinum Jubilee in England.

The couple were also commemorating their daughter’s big day at the time and according to royal footman Paul Burrell, the queen had a special dessert made for the little tyke.

However, the sovereign — who died on Sept. 8, 2022, at the age of 96 — allegedly didn’t get to meet with her great-granddaughter on her big day.

“Even on Lilibet’s first birthday the Queen didn’t see her,” Burrell, 65, told the Mirror recently.

“She saw her the day before. But on her birthday, the queen had a birthday cake made with one candle in it. And they never turned up. That candle was never lit,” Princess Diana’s former butler said.

The Invictus Games founder, 38, and the former actress, 42, had thrown a little bash for Lilibet at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor. The now-2-year-old was born on June 4, 2021, and was named after the queen and Harry’s late mother.

Just a day later, the monarch had inquired if the couple would like to come over to Buckingham Palace for tea time.

“[She] was told they’ve gone,” Burrell recalled. “‘What do you mean they’ve gone?’ she said. They’ve gone back to America. ‘Oh no, they never said goodbye.’”

He added that Her Majesty was “confused” by the Sussexes sudden departure back to their Montecito, California, home.

“How could you offend our Queen?” he wondered. “Well, I don’t understand anyone that could do that. Not her family, why would you want to?”

“She was devoid of jealousy, anger, envy, all those traits that we associate with other people she didn’t have. She was just a very simple soul. I wish the world could have known her the way I knew her,” he added.

The pair had decided to take a step back as senior members of the royal family in January 2020 and they subsequently left the United Kingdom later that year.

Harry and the queen had a tight bond over the course of their lives, with the empress “adoring” her grandson, a source told People last year.

On Thursday, he gave a heartwarming speech about her at the WellChild Awards. “As you also probably know, she would have been the first person to insist that I still come to be with you all instead of going to her,” he told the crowd in London. “And that’s precisely why I know, exactly one year on, she is looking down on all of us tonight, happy we’re together continuing to spotlight such an incredible community.”

He also made a surprise visit to her burial site at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on Friday, marking the first anniversary of her death.
