Scottie Scheffler is embracing a new role at Augusta National this week: dad-to-be.
When speaking to reporters Thursday after shooting a six-under 66 during the opening round of the 2024 Masters, the world’s current No. 1 golfer offered a candid response about impending parenthood as his wife, Meredith, is due to give birth to the couple’s first child later this month.
“People have asked us how our preparation is going for the baby and it’s like, well, I feel like we are a little underprepared. The nursery isn’t quite ready and we’ve had some issues at our house the last few weeks. I think that’s the exciting part. I think we are definitely underprepared to be parents,” Scheffler said.
Entering this year’s major tournament, where Scheffler is a heavy favorite, it had been reported the 2022 Masters champion would leave Augusta early if Meredith went into labor.
Scheffler, 27, said Thursday he’s “ready to go at a moment’s notice” if that’s the case.
“As far as her going into labor, I wouldn’t say I’m very concerned, we haven’t seen any of the early signs, but pregnancy is weird and it can happen at any time. But, yeah, open lines of communication and she can get ahold of me if she needs to,” he said.
Scheffler has been married to Meredith since 2020.
She supported him last month at TPC Sawgrass in Florida, where he won the 2024 Players Championship.
Scheffler will tee off for the second round of the Masters on Friday at 1:48 p.m.
He is paired with Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele, who finished Thursday one-under and even, respectively.
Bryson DeChambeau is currently atop the leaderboard with a seven-under 65.
The LIV Golf pro, who tees off at 11:54 a.m., is seeking his second major victory after winning the U.S. Open in 2020.
