Stephen Amell’s casting in ‘Suits’ spinoff blasted after SAG strike controversy, wife altercation

Stephen Amell has scored another gig — and fans aren’t happy about it.

The “Arrow” alum, 42, has been recently cast in the “Suits” spinoff titled “Suits: LA.”

The NBC series is currently in the works, with Amell starring as Ted Black, “a charismatic force of nature who puts his own needs above others,” according to Variety.

While the new legal drama is set in the universe of the 2011 USA Network series, none of the OG cast members will be involved.

Amell’s character is a former New York prosecutor who sets up camp in Los Angeles and leads a new team of lawyers at his firm.

He reacted to the news, writing on social media in response, “I know a thing or two about building a universe.”

People on X (formerly known as Twitter) rolled their eyes at his casting announcement following several controversies.

The Canadian actor was previously involved in a plane altercation with his wife, Cassandra Jean, in 2021.

Amell was removed from his flight from Austin to Los Angeles after screaming at Jean.

While appearing on his pal — and fellow (former) CW star — Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, “Inside of You,” Amell addressed the incident in August 2021.

“I wanted to have just a slight runway here to talk about this because what happened was — and it’s very, very simple — I had too many drinks, and I had too many drinks in a public place. And, I got on a plane,” Amell told Rosenbaum.  I’m actually, frankly, deeply ashamed of it.”

In July 2023, during the SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood, Amell blasted the protests at the time, calling the cause a “reductive negotiating tactic” and saying he wouldn’t support it.

He later attempted to clarify his comments calling actors’ strike “reductive” and “myopic” in an Instagram post. “My off the cuff use of the word ‘support’ is clearly contradictory to my true feelings and my emphatic statement that I stand with my union,” he wrote. “Of course I don’t like striking. Nobody does. But we have to do what we have to do.”

“Stephen Amell is one of the most wooden actors on the scene,” someone tweeted alongside a gif of a disappointed-looking Justin Timberlake.

A second person chimed in: “What little interest I may have had in the #Suits spinoff, #SuitsLA, has all but disintegrated completely with the Stephen Amell news. How did we go from [OG star Gabriel] Macht to Amell? I’m sorry, I just… that’s son goddamn bull-sh-t.”

“I’m so tired of Stephen Amell,” a third detractor added.

“Despite criticizing SAG-AFTRA and his fellow actors for striking to get the fair pay they deserved, Stephen Amell has unfortunately gotten yet another job, this time as the lead in ‘SUITS: L.A,’” a user penned.

Another fan pointed out: “Stephen Amell said all that loser sh-t last year, can’t act worth a damn and still got a new job.”

“Suits” ran for nine seasons and starred Patrick J. Adams, Gabriel Macht, Rick Hoffman, Gina Torres, and Meghan Markle.

Markle, 42, infamously left the show in 2017 following her engagement to now-husband Prince Harry. The cast also reunited at the 2024 Golden Globes last month — without Markle.
