Now that Tom Brady has settled into life as an NFL fan, he understands the frustrations that can boil over from the couch on any given Sunday.
When discussing his new game-day perspective on this week’s installment of “Let’s Go! with Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray” on SiriusXM, the retired NFL quarterback said he “can see why normal fans get pissed off” when watching on Television.
“There’s so much more context when you’re watching [and] you have this TV and they show every replay. On the field, you don’t see any of that. You’re seeing everything ground level,” Brady said.
“I think when you’re a fan, you see obviously a lot, you hear a lot. The commentators are saying a lot. You have the score right there, you have the timeouts listed, everything’s right there for you. It’s not necessarily like that when you’re a player. You’re just, you’re in the moment.”
Brady played in the NFL for 23 seasons — two decades with the Patriots and three years with the Buccaneers — before calling it a career in February.
Brady is taking this season off before beginning his 10-year, $375 million run with Fox as their top game analyst.
“I’m taking it all in. I’m trying to actually listen to a little bit from a broadcaster standpoint and how they’re calling the game, you know, paying attention more to, I’d say, the broadcasting element of it, the pageantry of it rather than, I would say, the nuances and the technicalities of the game,” Brady said.
Brady, 46, has been savoring family moments since hanging up his cleats, spending time with his three children.
The former quarterback co-parents son Benjamin, 13, and daughter Vivian, 10, with ex-wife Gisele Bündchen, whom he divorced in October 2022.
He also shares 16-year-old son Jack with his ex-girlfriend, actress Bridget Moynahan.
“I haven’t had the stress that I had while I was playing, so that’s allowed me to focus a little bit more on my physical health,” Brady said on a September installment of the podcast, where he shared he’s lost 10 pounds.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion added: “You could prioritize a lot of other things — career, kids, relationships, family, greater good, community.”
Elsewhere on this week’s show, Brady elaborated on some of his Sunday observations, including Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers throwing the football a month removed from Achilles surgery.
“He’s pretty determined to get back and I really appreciate that about Aaron. Some guys I think use injuries as an excuse not to play,” Brady said. “The inspiring part for me when I see a guy like that is it shows you the love of the game that he has.”
Rodgers, 39, suffered an Achilles injury just four plays into his Jets career in September.
Since undergoing surgery, the four-time league MVP has spoken out about his desire to return this year.
“I know it’s a tough battle. That’s an incredible injury that he’s trying to come back from. I appreciate his effort,” Brady said. “And that’s the approach that winners take is they try to get back out there to get back in the fight with their buddies.”
The Jets are at 3-3 entering their bye week after Sunday’s thrilling 20-14 win over the Eagles.
