“Twisters” caused a whirlwind in theaters on Friday, its opening night, raking in $32.2 million, The Numbers reported.
The Post called the disaster film, a sequel to the 1996 film “Twister,” “a reboot that’s actually worth your time.”
The movie, which stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, brought in $10.7 million in previews on Thursday, and is predicted to enjoy a possible $72 million dollar opener, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Despicable Me 4,” which was No. 1 for two weeks, fell to second place, with sales of just over $7.2 million. The sixth installment in Universal’s “Despicable Me” franchise already surpassed $450 million globally since it debuted on July 3.
“Inside Out 2″ remained in third, with a $3.8 million dollar take.
The Disney and Pixar film already beat “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” as the second-highest-grossing animated film at the box office, with $1.4 billion in sales so far. It has the potential to soon surpass the No. 1 highest earning animated film, “Frozen,” according to Collider.
“A Quiet Place: Day One,” which was in fifth last Friday, moved up a notch to fourth, with $1.87 million in revenue.
The rom-com “Fly Me to the Moon” fell down a spot to fifth, with earnings of $960,000.
