Pants, who needs ’em?
Fashion-forward celebs are making everyone see London and France by dropping trou — and wearing just underpants as bottoms.
Fall’s underwear-as-outerwear trend runs the gamut from tighty-whities to bedazzled G-strings, with Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid already ditching their pants to parade around in panties.
In late November, Jenner hit the streets in her skivvies while picking up a bouquet of flowers in Los Angeles, with a chunky knit sweater to compensate for the $7 Calzedonia tights she wore as bottoms. Fans of her look mused how the 27-year-old managed to turn “people’s legit worst nightmare” into a “slay” moment.
“Wish I could pull off forgetting my pants,” one commenter snarked.
Hadid, 26, channeled “Risky Business” vibes when she sported only white briefs with her tee in New York City in September while grabbing a slice of pizza. Paired with high white tube socks, trendy Ugg mini platform boots and a leather jacket, the model seemed to not have a care in the world strutting in her bloomers.
Kylie Jenner dared to wear white Loewe briefs paired with black stockings in October attending the label’s Paris fashion week show. “No pants no problem,” the 25-year-old wrote in an Instagram snap. Wearing metallic undies, “Thor” star Tessa Thompson also embraced the no-pants look in mid-November for Loewe’s Rodeo Drive store opening.
Even Taylor Swift got in on the trend, rocking a David Koma bedazzled cage skirt with a black bodysuit underneath at the 2022 MTV Europe Music Awards.
Other stars have been rocking their drawers, too — though we don’t expect I “never wear underwear” Jenna Bush Hager to adopt the trend anytime soon. “The Crown” star Emma Corrin wore a simple black bodysuit for a red carpet appearance while Lourdes Leon did a sheer tights with undies look for the Thierry Mugler exhibition opening.
This week, Rita Ora rocked the sheer bottoms trend, exposing her thong at The Fashion Awards. Model Georgia Fowler chose a see-through skirt over underthings for November’s GQ Men Of The Year Awards, while Emily Ratajkowski wore a fishnet dress over a thong for W Magazine’s 50th Anniversary in October.
Never one to miss out on a risque moment, Julia Fox has worn her knickers on two occasions, once in October in a very skimpy snakeskin number and again at the CFDA Fashion Awards in November. The “Uncut Gems” star also tackled the trend when she infamously grocery shopped in a bra and briefs in May.
The trend is likely not going away anytime soon, either. Panties as pants showed up on many runways during Spring 2023 collection showings, like Tom Ford, who sent several looks with merely lacy G-strings down the runway.
Several brands opted to pair intimates with tights, like Bottega Veneta and Del Core, which showed underthings with sheer black stockings.
However, French designers Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant of Coperni managed to class up briefs by pairing silky panties with matching cropped blazers.
Perhaps the best part about the trend? The outfits are half off.
