This toothless dog finally has something to smile about.
A “decrepit” chihuahua named Lord Herald has gone viral after the adoption shelter posted a brutally honest description of the dog, mocking him with the moniker of “world’s most adoptable” pup.
But their tongue-in-cheek message might have turned the joke into reality.
“It was pure sarcasm that he’s the most adoptable, but with all the comments he probably is,” Kelly Dietrich, co-founder of the national nonprofit One More Dog Rescue, told Kennedy News.
The small black chihuahua with bulging eyes and a tongue too big for his head was brought into a Chicago shelter to be put down when he was saved by One More Dog Rescue.
Then, last month, the shelter decided to post a very satirical biography of the 10-year-old pup, who suffers from a severe heart murmur and persistent cough.
“We’ve done it. We have found him. THE most adoptable dog on the planet,” the Facebook post began. “Oh and he’s a big biter. Loves to bite. Don’t worry though the guy has zero teeth so instead it’s just like a sad gummy kiss.”
“Also the excitement from latching on brings on a coughing fit. Yes, you can laugh,” the post said — assuring they won’t euthanize the dog for his bad behavior.
The rescue organization explained that while Lord Herald may be “decrepit and harmless,” they are sure that his big dog energy, cartoon-ish looks and love of hats could “bring someone to peak TikTok fame.”
“There is not a soul on earth who will not want to apply for him. We have won the game of rescue,” they added.
The hilarious Facebook post quickly went viral with 5.6 thousand shares and 4.4 thousand reactions — which seemed to do the trick. One More Dog said they received at least 50 adoptions applications within the first week, and continue getting messages about the pitiful pup.
“I think everyone loves an honest post and everyone loves a bit of satire. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and I think that’s a breath of fresh air,” said Dietrich, who’s based in Cleveland, Ohio.
“There’s no point in sugar coating things. It doesn’t do the dogs any favors. We like our adopters to know everything we can tell them and Lord Herald certainly has a lot to disclose.”
The rescue agency co-founder explained that despite being very small, Lord Herald has a “the personality of a very large dog” and would rather lounge around in his bed than be cuddled — though he has grown friendly with the other foster dogs.
One More Dog Rescue was founded in 2017 and house around 40-50 dogs at a time, so having Lord Herald adopted would be a great help to make room for another pup.
Lord Herald’s adoption offers are being reviewed while he’s at the foster home for a few months, but the rescue agency is combing through looking for a “a more quiet home” with someone who understands he won’t be an accessory to squeeze into a purse — lest you feel the wrath of his gummy bite.
“There’s somebody out there who he’ll be perfect for. We just have to find them,” Dietrich said.
