Michigan’s monkeypox case count rose to 153 from 104 in the past week, led by the metro Detroit area.

The state’s growth of 47% in cases reported on that section was higher than the national growth of 31%. It moved Michigan – the 10th most populous state – in confirmed cases up two places to 17th.

Monkeypox is a viral disease that can cause a rash that looks like a pimple or blisters, along with other symptoms. It is usually spread by close contact with an infected person, or by touching shared objects, clothing, or surfaces.

The virus was not commonly found in the US before the 2022 outbreak. In recent months, the number of cases continues to rise, with infections in all 50 states, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of Monday, the CDC had reported 45,535 global cases and 16,603 US cases, with no US deaths linked to the virus. According to the World Health Organization, global cases have actually declined in the past week.

Men who have had sexual or close contact with other men have made up the majority of cases to date, but anyone can become infected, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Health officials have said they expect case totals to rise as more tests become available and awareness of the disease increases and what to look for.

Kalamazoo this week became the latest county to identify its first case. Others with at least one case include Bay, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Kent, Livingston, Montcalm, Muskegon, Ottawa, St. Clair and Washtenaw counties.
