Jumper’s bungee cord snaps: ‘I opened my eyes and I was surrounded by water’

One lucky tourist is bouncing back after a terrifying bungee cord break.

A 39-year-old man barely escaped death after his line snapped during a 10-story jump. Video of the terrifying moment went viral after the victim decided to share his harrowing experience.

Mike, who revealed only a first name in the interest of privacy, decided to go bungee jumping while on vacation in Pattaya, Thailand, with a friend earlier this year.

The Changthai Thappraya Safari and Adventure Park has a wide range of activities including zip lines and live-round shooting.

The Hong Kong resident originally went to try out the firing range, but then decided he would bungee jump on a lark after one of his travel buddies did so.

The tourist jumped off the podium, and just milliseconds before he reached the bottom of the plunge the rope snapped, sending him into the body of water below.

“It was really high so I closed my eyes. I planned to open my eyes again when I bounced back up,” Mike told CNN. “I realized the cord had snapped when I opened my eyes and I was surrounded by water.”

Mike was knocked unconscious when he hit the water and was left covered in bruises from the fall.

“I landed on my left side so the injuries were more serious there,” he said. “It was as if someone just beat me up real bad.”

Thankfully, Mike was able to come up to the surface and swim, even though his feet were still tied together by the lower part of the bungee cord.

“If the person doesn’t know how to swim, he or she will be in big trouble,” he admitted.

Adventure park founder Nithit Intim claimed that this was the first time he had seen a cord snap.

“After the cord was broken, our staff got [Mike] out of the water immediately, and asked him if he was okay,” he told CNN. “[Mike] said he felt bruised. So we took him to the hospital.”

Mike revealed that the park covered the cost of X-ray and ultrasound scans in Thailand as well as refunding the price of the jump.

Mike had signed a liability waiver prior to making the jump, according to Intim, who also said that the park would be willing to pay any additional direct medical costs if they’re provided with receipts.

“Our staff explained that if any mishap happens or any accident takes place, our company will compensate medical bills. But the client can’t demand for compensation on other kind of expenses,” Intim said.
