They thought you couldn’t make a viral video omelet without cracking some eggs.
Parents are receiving backlash online after filming themselves cracking eggs on their kids’ heads as part of the latest appalling social media trend.
Videos of the ill-hatched “egg crack challenge” are amassing millions of views on TikTok.
For the uninitiated, the half-boiled prank involves inviting one’s young kids to cook eggs with them, only to break one on the tyke’s head before dissolving into sophomoric giggles.
In many instances, such as this disturbing video, the egg-headed gag results in the toddler bursting into tears.
However, other clips feature victims who appeared bewildered by the yolky act of betrayal, while other somewhat-older victims laughed (and even cursed) alongside their amused parents.
In one hilarious clip, a young woman shatters a chicken embryo on a boy’s head, prompting him to exclaim, “What the f–k!”
These tot omelets did not go over easy with fans on TikTok, who accused the perpetrators of egg-sploiting their kids for internet clout.
“Poor baby, she looked so hurt and confused,” said one heartbroken critic regarding a video where the mother uses her daughter as a human egg-beater.
“Poor thing. She looked really excited to cook with you too,” wrote another. “You were the only one laughing.”
A third declared, “And that’s how you lose trust.”
One of the most vocal critics was Sarah Adams — known as @mom.charted on TikTok — who frequently posts about the perils of parental oversharing.
“When I see those videos I think, ‘Are we that bored as parents and desperate for content?’ ” she argued in a video condemning the foolhardy pursuit. “[Are we] needing to post on the internet so bad because it is so consuming to be a part of our world?”
Adams added, “And the dopamine hit, and the likes and views, that we now in 2023 are cracking eggs on our children’s heads in hopes that they have an entertaining reaction that we can post publicly online to entertain strangers?”
This isn’t the first TikTok trend to be labeled a form of child abuse.
During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, parents were ripped after pretending to smear poop on their traumatized tots for laughs — a cruel trick that would more often than not leave their tykes in tears.
