NYC council homing in on decision to ban flying doves from weddings

They’re flipping the bird on brides.

The New York City Council, apparently having no other business left to attend to, is homing in on a decision to ban the flight of white pigeons — also known as “release doves” — during special ceremonies such as weddings, The City reported.

“These bird releases — they’re just a harmful and cruel way to mark weddings, gender reveals and memorial services,” Manhattan Councilwoman Carlina Rivera told the outlet.

The rep, who championed the beaky bill, called the timeworn tradition “unnecessary.”

Earlier in the year, a white pigeon that was turned pink for a gender reveal was discovered dead in Rivera’s district.

If approved, the legislation would ban humans from setting the winged things free for a fee, purchasing them or keeping them.

Birds of a feather activists like Allie Taylor, president of Voters For Animal Rights say that uncaging the avians subjects them to unnecessary risk.

Citing a Brooklyn Bridge Park mishap from earlier this year — where 13 pigeons wound up needing to be rescued — Taylor said “these birds just stare around looking completely confused and not sure where to go.”

But some New Yorkers like Anthony, a 73-year-old who runs a Brooklyn based dove release service and chose to withhold his last name, think the budding ban is for the birds.

“Why would the City Council put something like that out? I don’t understand,”  he told a reporter, saying that he spends $2,600 a month caring for his caged charges.

“You can’t make no money from this … it’s just a hobby — you don’t get nothing out of this but aggravation.”
