It’s not about the end look — it’s about the aesthetic journey.
People typically put makeup on before leaving their house, but the latest cosmetics trend to take over TikTok isn’t meant to be seen. It sees beauty buffs applying a full face before hopping into the shower.
“Pre-shower makeup,” according to its practitioners — predominantly young women — celebrates the opportunity to experiment and be “silly” with cosmetics completely at their leisure. It’s a chance to test new products, practice application techniques and try a few bolder looks on for size.
The hashtag #preshowermakeup has 3.8 million views on TikTok. “Putting more makeup on right before you shower 😻” one video with 1.6 million views explains.
Another girl posted a video with 1.2 million views showing off her exaggerated full beat, writing, “When he said he’s coming over early but you have your pre-shower makeup on.”
One TikTokker explained that she wanted to learn how to do a smokey eye — and there’s no “better time to do it” than before a shower.
Cosmetics retailer Ipsy recently shared a repost from one TikTok contributor to the trend, writing in the caption, “Pre shower makeup is always unhinged,” accompanied by a glitter emoji.
Meanwhile, comments from #preshowermakeup viewers on TikTok suggest that they’ve long engaged in this sort of cosmetic catharsis.
“Literally because it’s so fun to play around and experiment,” one agreed in a recent trending video.
Joked another, “Then it turns into your best work ever and don’t wanna wash it off.”
