She wants you to make better pore decisions.
Board-certified NYC dermatologist Dr. Shereene Idriss is sharing five things she would never do to her skin by highlighting improper washcloth, Botox, and sunscreen practices and badmouthing certain skincare products.
Her 4-minute TikTok has drawn 1.2 million views since it was posted last month.
“No. 1, I would never use the same facial washcloth two nights in a row,” Idriss said.
“I know it sounds excessive, but you don’t wash your face and then introduce a dirty underwear to wipe it off,” she continued. “Because that’s essentially what you’re doing when you use the same facial washcloth two nights in a row.”
Idriss recommends buying seven small washcloths and doing laundry once a week to ensure you’re not reusing dirty ones.
Never use a pore vacuum or blackhead extractor
Idriss noted that even as a dermatologist, her use of a blackhead extractor can get “out of hand.”
“Bottom line, that s–t is going to f–k up your skin,” Idriss declared. “Because guess what? You’re going to suck those babies out, which are probably not even blackheads, they’re probably sebaceous filaments. And then your skin is going to have a little divot left behind.”
Idriss says using a blackhead extractor now guarantees you will visit her Midtown office in “two or three years” to complain about your skin texture.
She recommends sticking to salicylic acid if you’re oily and have a lot of blackheads and sulfur if you have sebaceous filaments, which are parts of pores often mistaken for blackheads, but help keep skin hydrated.
Steer clear of expired sunscreen
“It’s expensive s–t. And it’s supposed to protect your skin,” Idriss said of sunblock. “Why the hell would you take a gamble on a product that’s probably been sitting by some window for, like, a year because now you remember you’re gonna go to the beach and you’re gonna want to use it again.”
She demanded: “Just go buy a new one and get the protection that you’re actually buying.”

Time your Botox injections better
“I inject Botox fillers all day every day,” Idriss explained. “It goes against my financial interest to tell you this, but allow your movement to fully come back [to your face] before you get Botox again, especially if you’re being advised to get Botox at a young age.”
Though Botox is becoming increasingly popular with Gen Z, Idriss says young people can skip the jabs.
“In the long run, if you over-Botox every single time whenever the tiniest movement comes back, by the time you’re over the 50-plus age range, you’re gonna be flat,” she shared.
Nix hyaluronic acid serum from your skincare routine
“I would never use a dedicated hyaluronic acid serum — especially not a $300 one,” Idriss proclaimed. “Do not get me started.”
Idriss — who reports examining 100 to 150 patients a week — says overuse of the serum, which is supposed to help skin retain moisture, can lead to redness and inflammation.
