Gerrit Cole’s wife caught foul ball during his Double-A rehab start

On Tuesday night, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole made his first minor league rehab appearance on the mound for the Double-A Somerset Patriots, and while he looked like his old self, one of his family members also stood out for a play of their own.

In the stands was his wife Amy Cole, who impressively caught a foul ball at TD Bank Ballpark.

The Patriots posted a photo on their X account of Amy showing off her souvenir.

Due to nerve inflammation and edema in his right elbow, Cole had been sidelined since spring training, spending the start of the 2024 season on the injured list.

His appearance with the Patriots on Tuesday was his first time back in the minors since 2016, the year he married Amy.

Fans flooded into the New Jersey ballpark, pumped to see Cole on the mound wearing his signature No. 45.

Cole lived up to his fans’ expectations, exciting everyone for his return to the big leagues, including Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone.

“I feel good,” Cole said before the Yankees beat the Twins 9-5 in The Bronx on Wednesday. “We’ll take it start by start, just like we have the whole time. … It was a good day yesterday, so I’m very encouraged.”

After the Yankees’ victory over the Twins on Tuesday night, Boone told reporters he caught a couple innings of the rehab outing and “thought [Cole] looked really sharp.”

“Just as far as command of the fastball and getting to where he wanted to get the swing and miss,” Boone told reporters in New York. “So the 15 or 20 pitches that I saw looked like Gerrit. He looked sharp. Another encouraging step.

“We’ll see how we get through these next several days.”

Though unclear when the Yankees ace will return in the big leagues, he will be back on the mound for the Patriots on Sunday.
