Popeyes surprises fans as beloved menu item hits grocery stores nationwide — but not everyone is impressed

DIY Popeyes is here.

Craving Popeyes but can’t get to a restaurant? Now you can head to your local grocery store to satisfy that craving.

The beloved Louisiana-style fried chicken chain is expanding its retail presence with two different styles of boxed biscuit mixes — including one you can’t actually get at their store locations.

On Tuesday, Popeyes announced that it will be launching a Homestyle Biscuit Mix and a Cajun Cheddar Biscuit Mix in the baking aisle at grocery stores. The announcement comes ahead of National Biscuit Day, which is on May 29.

The boxed mixes allow fans to make their own biscuits, bringing the brand’s “iconic, buttery, flaky biscuits” into their own kitchens for a taste of the “signature Louisiana flavor Popeyes fans know and love.”

Biscuits are a fan-favorite staple of the Popeyes menu, though when eating at a Popeyes, they only serve classic Buttermilk Biscuits.

Now, the new innovation gives customers a way to have the classic Homestyle biscuit whenever they want, as well as try a new flavor with Cajun Cheddar.

Both require just butter and water for baking, as well as a dash of cheese for the Cajun Cheddar variety. In a few steps, fans will have 10 freshly baked biscuits in 18 minutes.

“Our guests have always loved our biscuits, and we’re thrilled to bring the flavor of the iconic Popeyes Biscuit into homes nationwide in a whole new way,” Matt Rubin, Chief Marketing Officer at Popeyes, said in a statement.

The new line leaked on social media a few weeks ago, and people were divided by the rumor.

“Finally, I can have those wonderful homestyle biscuits at home,” one person wrote.

“They used to sell something like this before COVID! so happy to see it again!” another noted.

Others weren’t as thrilled.

“Popeyes, you I know I love y’all, but respectfully- WHO ASKED FOR THIS??” a customer asked.

“Wow, you can now make their terrible dry as **** biscuits at home,” someone commented.

Priced at $3.23-$3.49, depending on retailer and location, the new boxed biscuit mixes from Popeyes will be sold nationwide starting May 26 at major retailers, including Walmart, HEB, Target and Kroger.

Popeyes is also giving fans a digital offer to celebrate National Biscuit Day. Rewards members can get a free biscuit with a minimum purchase of $5 at participating locations nationwide, exclusively on Popeyes.com and the Popeyes app.
