A Massachusetts worker has elicited sympathy online after alleging that her pay went down after she scored a promotion.
The woman, named Kelly, took to TikTok to detail the drama, which has clocked up more than 140,000 views.
Kelly — who didn’t specify her vocation — said her manager messaged her on Teams after awarding her the promotion saying human resources had “made a mistake” when they initially hired her.
“She [the manager] was like, ‘Yeah, so they actually weren’t supposed to give you that much when you first got hired,’” the Boston resident recalled. “I was like ‘How’s that my problem?’”
Kelly claimed that the boss alerted HR that she was getting bumped up, they realized their mistake and told her they had to “decrease” her pay.
“So you’re telling me I will get more responsibilities with less pay,” spluttered Kelly, who is not a salaried employee.
The influencer said she’s now being paid $2 less after the promotion — a downgrade that’s particularly devastating as she doesn’t “get paid that much to begin with” as an “hourly full-time worker.”
Despite the monetary demotion, the worker said she’s staying at the job because she can’t afford to leave.
“I live paycheck to paycheck,” lamented Kelly. “It’s extremely hard and I feel like I need a second job now.”
The TikTok commentariat sympathized with her plight with one commiserator saying: “That’s crazy!”
Others advised her to quit regardless of the financial hardship.
“Yeah I would look for a new job immediately,” suggested one fan.
Another wrote, “Decline the promotion and file for partial unemployment lol.”
