Costco is opening 9 new locations in the US — all by the end of summer

Need 25 pounds of jasmine rice? Well, nine more states now have the option.

Costco is known for a trove of popular goodies like free samples, a 48-pack of toilet paper, and, of course, the hot dog and soda combo for $1.50.

The warehouse giant is now making moves in nine other states as the chain plans to open 10 more locations this summer, including one in Taiwan. From June to August, keep your eyes — and stomach — open as you look for the new spots.

Announced on its “New Locations” page, the behemoth will be slinging its bulk buys in the following places:

  • Syracuse, UT – June 2026
  • Pensacola, FL – June 2026
  • S Kaohsiung, TW – July 2026
  • Albany, NY – August 2026
  • Oconomowoc, WI – August 2026
  • Otsego, MN – August 2026
  • Mansfield, TX – August 2026
  • Celina, TX – August 2026
  • Stone Mountain, GA – August 2026
  • Lee’s Summit, MO – August 2026

The new locations will push Costco past its 640 US stores after an already busy 2025. Last year, the company welcomed 27 new warehouses.

One question shoppers are asking: Will the new spots have their updated check-out line technology? The Post reached out for comment but has not heard back.

However, in an earnings call back in May, CEO Ron Vachris revealed was making “meaningful strides to deliver a more seamless and convenient experience for our members across the warehouse and online.” One of those changes came at the checkout line.

Costco recently added a new scanning technology, allowing employees manning the checkout line to pre-scan a shopper’s cart while they’re waiting. While confusing, it allows customers to get through checkout and out the door in record time, just eight seconds.

So how does it work? A Costco staff member will come to your cart and scan all of the items. Once you reach the register, you’ll scan your membership card, and all of the scanned items will load on the screen. All you have to do at that point is pay.

“The warehouses that are first to adopt this pre-scan technology have shown checkout speed improvements of up to 20%,” Vachris revealed. “And across our US warehouses overall, we achieved record levels of checkout productivity in the final weeks of the quarter.”

There’s also another technology hoping to speed up the process and take employees out of the equation. With a new Scan & Pay feature, shoppers can wait for it — scan and pay — for items through the Costco app. The move is similar to a popular rival, Sam’s Club’s move called scan and go.

Sam’s Club’s feature also lets customers scan item barcodes, pay directly on their phone, and completely bypasses traditional checkout lines.

All of these moves come as Costco aims to take the checkout process in a new, speedier direction. Currently, customers report that wait times can exceed 20 minutes. Shoppers and workers both have mixed reviews.

“I’ve had them pre-scan my cart in line, and it saved a couple of minutes while helping the lines flow a little faster. It’s not revolutionary, it’s just helpful,” The Post previously reported.
