Iconic Valley diner that opened in 1977 to permanently close: ‘Nothing good lasts anymore’

A classic family-owned vintage diner in Van Nuys is shutting down after nearly 50 years of serving customers.

Heart’s Coffee Shop, a community staple since 1977, has been the go-to spot for traditional American comfort food and a retro atmosphere in San Fernando Valley.

Regulars saw the diner not just as a place to eat, but as a living piece of neighborhood history. News of the closure has people outpouring emotions on the internet. An announcement on Instagram has received hundreds of comments. “This is the worst news of my life,” one user wrote.

Heart’s Coffee Shop will be permanently closed on August 9.

“Everything built designed and run by humans is being erased. What an interesting time to be alive – we had to pay good money to see science fiction movies when I was a kid. Now all you have to do is walk around a few blocks lol,” another user wrote.

The diner was launched in 1977 and is now closing down after almost 50 years of operations.

The diner’s menu is well-regarded for classic staples –– including chicken fried steak and eggs, Denver omelets, french toast and pancakes. Online reviews of the coffee shop boast about the quality of the home-cooked meals and the generous portion sizes.

Shakira Glover, a local guide on Google Maps, posted a review after her visit two months ago. “Cute, cash only diner with a parking lot. Very affordable. Friendly service. Food is very homey and filling. Good coffee. Would absolutely go again if I’m in the area,” Glover wrote.

Josh Rodarthe said he has been coming to the diner with his dad on Sundays for almost 20 years. “The food is great. The staff is excellent and they are all very kind and kid friendly I would give them 10 stars if I could,” Rodarthe wrote in his review.
