If Sarah J. Maas’s “fairy smut” has you needing backup for your ‘wettest moments’, this underwear brand is here to absorb the blow — up to 11 super tampons’ worth, to be exact.
Underwear brand Knix has launched a spicy new collection in collaboration with Sarah J. Maas, author of the hit fantasy-romance series “A Court of Thorns and Roses.”
Knix CMO Cynthia Leo isn’t shying away from the raunchy theme. “We make leak-proof underwear, and the books are a little saucy,” she quipped, “so we wanted to be there for all of your wettest moments.”
The cheeky ACOTAR x Knix line claims its leak-proof underwear absorbs the equivalent of “up to 11 super tampons.” The brand markets itself on being eqipped to handle period blood, sweat, pee and discharge.
Maas’ book series debuted in 2015, and the viral franchise has since inspired merchandise collabs ranging from Sam’s Club throw blankets to $700 ball gowns.
The new line features sets themed around the series’ fictional courts: floral pairs for the Spring Court and seductive lingerie made for “deep bonds and a little spice” for the Night Court.
The Autumn and Summer Courts get their own inspired designs, alongside merch featuring popular series catchphrases like a t-shirt that says“ darling” and another with the “bat boyfriends” – based on the male characters.
Knix teamed up with 40 diehard fans to help design the collection. Influencers flown to New York for the brand launch praised how the line channeled Maas’ strong female characters.
A major goal of the crossover is to appeal to long-time readers and series newcomers alike, trying to keep the designs universal. It joins a growing list of ACOTAR lingerie partnerships—including For Love and Lemons’ fairy-core fashion line, featuring underwear labeled with the male characters’ names.
Fairy smut is a sub-genre of “Romantasy” (romance and fantasy) where the fairy men are muscular, mythical men who have magic and powers. The fairy men typically fall in love with a human girl, have lots of sexual encounters and then the girl becomes a fairy too.
Their wings and powers make the characters have abstract sex – where they can sometimes read each other’s minds, have sex mid-air, or cause destruction.
Maas has frequently defended the explicit romantic themes in her books, pushing back against critics who dismiss the genre. She has spoke out on podcasts to call out critics who use the phrase ‘smut’ to dismiss her work and the misogyny behind those who think smut is unserious literary work.
“I find that there is a tendency for people to roll their eyes at things that bring joy. And bring women joy, especially. And it pisses me the fuck off constantly,” Maas shared on the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper.
Fans of the series have mixed feelings about the new line, with some fans commenting that the line ‘isn’t whimsical enough’ and looks ‘too basic.’
“We need whimsical, magical, royal. These garments could have been in the collection of any department store. I don’t see ACOTAR in any of this,” quipped one user.
But others think the leakproof underwear will be a big help when reading the newest book.
“Gorgeous AND can stand the test of watery bowels?? Sign me up,” said one Instagrammer.
