According to health officials, the first case of monkeypox has been reported in New York in a person under the age of 18.
The only data posted on the state’s Department of Health website says the case is of a patient who lives outside of New York City.
It is one of 192 probable and confirmed cases of the virus reported outside the Big Apple.
Within New York City, the city had 2,596 cases as of Friday, according to the DOH.
The virus is usually spread by close contact with an infected person or by touching the items they use, such as clothing or towels.
