Brian Kelly spent more than four decades coaching in college football, and it did not translate well during his debut as a color commentator for CBS Sports.

The former Notre Dame and LSU head coach was roasted for his performance in the booth for the Jacksonville State-North Dakota State game on Saturday.

“I’ll have to get better to keep up with you guys, but thanks for making this one a little bit easier than I thought,” Kelly said on the broadcast late in the fourth quarter while alongside Rich Waltz and Adam Breneman.

The 64-year-old Kelly — fired by LSU last October after compiling a 34-14 record over three-plus seasons in Baton Rouge — pulled back the curtain on his coaching career in the second quarter when the stadium clock failed to stop during a two-minute drive at the Fargodome.

“This would be a Monday morning meeting with the game management crew in my office, if I’m at home and the clock’s running,” Kelly said on the broadcast.

Breneman asked Kelly to “give us an idea of the things you would say” in such a meeting.

“Just, ‘You guys need to do a better job,’ and I’d leave it at that,” Kelly responded.

Some online didn’t spare Kelly while grading his booth debut.

“Brian Kelly couldn’t make it through ONE broadcast without making an excuse for a head coach,” one person said.

“Can he be fired at this yet?” another added.

Others jokingly asked about his Southern accent that he went viral for attempting while at LSU.

It was announced in July that Kelly would join CBS Sports as an analyst for select college football games and a seat on the network’s Tuesday show “Inside College Football.”

Kelly served as a studio analyst for CBS Sports Network’s NFL draft coverage in April.
