‘Cicada Invasion 2024’ has people freaking out — and uploading creepy viral videos: ‘We are under attack’

Americans are bugging out.

Large swaths of the continental United States are living in a Hitchcockian nightmare, as biblically-proportioned, boisterous swarms of cicadas — the most in over 220 years — have overtaken the great outdoors as the weather warms up.

The historically massive invasion — estimated to number in the trillions — has become everyday social media fodder, as onlookers upload their personal encounters with the buggy horror.

The chilling sights and accompanying sounds — cicada noises are known to rival a jackhammer and car alarm, as one influencer pointed out — are especially prevalent down south, in states like Tennessee.

One TikToker captioned a video of an outdoor worker operating a power saw while covered with well over a dozen of the large bugs with the words “we are under attack.”

“We [are] our here fighting for our lives!” the narrator yells in terror. “These cicadas have taken over.”

One horrified commenter said she got into a crash after spotting one inside of her vehicle.

Elsewhere in the Nashville area, a newcomer to the region confessed that “this whole cicada invasion is not my cup of tea.”

After walking towards a tree filled with them, she fled back to her car.

In Central Illinois, one person wore a beekeeper’s suit just to cut their grass.

“The only way we can mow without getting attacked,” the desperate lawn maintainer captioned a video.

Another person’s yard was totally engulfed by the unwelcomed visitors, they posted.

Albeit unpleasant, experts say that cicadas present no dangers to people or pets — only young trees are considered vulnerable.

They will retreat towards summer’s end.

Adding insult to injury, similar-looking Mormon crickets also are keeping people indoors due to their gigantic flocks, one TikToker showed.
