Pass gas and pass the relationship test.
Many people are afraid that farting could be a relationship failure, but sometimes you just need to let it go.
But when is it okay to do so?
A survey from Mic showed that 29% of couples wait between two to six months into a relationship to fart — about the same amount of time they wait to say “I love you.”
And although some might be blown away by that statistic, it’s actually a good sign for your relationship.
Partners who are comfortable enough to fart in front of each other may have stronger bonds and better emotional health.
“Farting around each other is a subconscious sign of comfort,” relationship expert Michael Sartain told Scary Mommy.
“It shows that you’re at ease in the relationship and don’t feel the need to filter yourself.”
He explained that “when you can joke about these little things, it’s a sign that you’re secure enough to be real with each other.”
“You’re not holding back or putting on a facade. That kind of honesty is rare, and it’s a great foundation for a healthy partnership.”
Over time, Sartain believes that relationship milestones should include a level of vulnerability, such as feeling comfortable going to the bathroom in front of each other or letting your guard down.
“It’s not that you don’t care about your partner,” he noted, “but you’re so comfortable with them that you’re no longer worried about these small, human things.”
For many, the idea of farting in front of a partner can feel uncomfortable, especially for women due to societal pressures.
However, Sartain argues that if breaking wind could break the relationship there’s a deeper issue.
“If you’re spending time together, sleeping in the same bed, and having regular intimacy, then farting shouldn’t matter. If it does, the issue might be more about a lack of attraction,” he said.
Ultimately, Sartain emphasizes that farting —or not farting— shouldn’t be a relationship dealbreaker. “It’s about comfort and acceptance,” he explained.
“If you can accept each other’s quirks, that’s real intimacy. Farting isn’t the only marker of closeness.”
