Expectant mommies of 2024 are refusing to masc up — sorry, Charlie!
Modish moms-to-be are giving traditionally masculine baby names such as Michael, John and Charles the boot — embracing, instead, names like Carmen, Hazel and Rose for their incoming little boys.
“Today’s parents are fixated on sending the right messages with the names they choose,” Pamela Redmond, founder of Nameberry, a global site devoted to monikers, in a recent report on buzzy baby naming trends expected to dominate in the new year.
“The perfect baby name for 2024 is one that is ahead of the style curve, personally significant and identity-defining,” added Redmond.
Nameberry researchers determined that girls’ names for boys will be all the rage among accepting parents come the annual calendar change, noting that A-listers such as John Legend and Chrissy Teigen — who crowned their little bruiser Wren Alexander in June— as well as Rihanna and A$AP Rocky — who named their latest addition Riot Rose in August — have already kicked off the gender-bending festivities.
“It’s tempting to chalk up this trend to society’s increasingly progressive views on gender identity, but that’s not the only reason parents are choosing girl names for boys,” read the report. “Feminine boy names often appeal for their symbolism, soft and sensitive image or connections to the past.”

Owing to the impact of the ultra-feminist flick “Barbie” — which shined as an unapologetically pink bolt of lightning for female empowerment upon its July 28 release — analysts discovered that stereotypically girly names like “Honey” or “Lulu” will be revered as no-nonsense, true-grit monikers for little ladies next year.

“All of these names are united by Barbie’s principles of feminism: feminine can be feminist, strength is attractive, and individuality should be embraced,” said Nameberry trend-spotters.
In 2023, nature — rather than gender — reigned as the supreme theme in baby naming.
Wildlife-inspired names like Daisy and Iris, both flowers, as well as Leo, which means “lion” in Latin, ruled the roster.
And in July, a Nameberry poll found that Azriel, Cohen, Dixie and Karen ranked as some of the most controversial baby names of the year.
“We surveyed our site visitors on the most polarizing choices,” said the spokesperson in an eye-popping TikTok post. “These [names] were some of the top answers.”
