The New Year is almost here and, with that, the focus turns to January and what’s new in the primetime landscape.
From prestige dramas to comedies to thrillers, the first month of the year is jam-packed with offerings. Here are the nine hot shows to have on your radar for early 2023.
“Mayfair Witches”
Based on the Anne Rice books of the same name, this supernatural story follows neurosurgeon Rowan (Alexandra Daddario, “The White Lotus,”), who discovers that she’s secretly the heir to a family of witches. She must deal with her new powers and with a powerful being called Lasher (Jack Huston), who has haunted her family for generations.
Premiere date: Jan. 8 on AMC (9 p.m.) and AMC+.
“The Traitors”
Hosted by Alan Cumming, this reality competition series is set in a castle in the Scottish Highlands. Celebs and everyday people compete together for a cash prize of up to $250,000. The catch? A few contestants are “traitors” out to steal the prize. The celebrity contestants include Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, Reza Farahan (“Shahs of Sunset”) and Kate Chastain (“Below Deck”).
Premiere date: Jan. 12 on Peacock
“The Climb”
Jason Momoa and rock-climbing champ Chris Sharma host this reality competition series featuring amateur rock climbers competing for a $100,000 cash prize — and a sponsorship with the sportswear company prAna.
Premiere date: Jan. 12 on HBO Max.
“The Last of Us”
Pedro Pascal stars in a post-apocalyptic drama based on the popular video game of the same name. He plays Joel, a smuggler who is tasked with bringing teen girl Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a brutal future America.
Premiere date: Jan. 15 on HBO (9 p.m.)
“MILF Manor”
This dating show follows eight women ranging in age fro 40 to 60 who travel to Mexico for dating adventures with men half their age.
Premiere date: Jan. 15 on TLC (10 p.m.) and discovery+.
“That ’90s Show”
The spinoff of “That ’70s Show” follows the children of the original characters and is set in the summer of 1995 as Eric and Donna’s teen daughter, Leia Forman, makes friends with a new generation of Point Place kids — while visiting her grandparents, Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp), in Wisconsin. Original series stars Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Laura Prepon and Wilmer Valderrama will return for guest appearances.
Premiere date: Jan. 19 on Netflix.
“Accused”
This new anthology series from the producers of “24” and “Homeland” explores a different crime with a different cast in each episode, including TV veterans Rachel Bilson, Wendell Pierce, Abigail Breslin, Michael Chiklis, Margo Martindale and Rhea Perlman.
Premiere date: Jan. 22 on Fox (9 p.m.)
“Poker Face”
The TV debut for creator Rian Johnson (“Knives Out,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) stars Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale, who has the ability to determine when someone is lying. As she hits the road in her car, she stumbles on crimes … which she solves. Guest stars include Adrien Brody, Chloë Sevigny, Clea DuVall, Tim Meadows, Ron Perlman, Jameela Jamil and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Premiere date: Jan. 26 on Peacock.
“Shrinking”
A comedy, created by Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein (“Ted Lasso”), that stars Jason Segel and Harrison Ford as a grieving therapist (Segel) who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks.
