It’s the end of a late night era.
“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will air its final episode tonight. Though “The Late Show” dates back to 1993, Colbert has been the host since 2015, when he took over for original host David Letterman.
CBS announced “The Late Show”s cancellation in July 2025, stating it was “purely a financial decision.”
“We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire ‘The Late Show’ franchise in May of 2026,” CBS executives’ statement read. “We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.”
