Special delivery: It’s a daughter-in-law!
Utah nurse Mary Ann West realized that she helped deliver her now-daughter-in-law, Kelsey Poll, more than 20 years ago.
At the time, West worked as a labor and delivery nurse at Lakeview Hospital, helping expectant mothers welcome their bundles of joy into the world.
On June 15, 2001, West assisted a pregnant Stacy Poll, Kelsey’s mother, who was ready to deliver her baby girl.
However, Stacy was suffering from a rare condition known as velamentous cord insertion — a serious complication that occurs when the umbilical cord from a fetus doesn’t insert into the placenta correctly, according to Cleveland Clinic.
West played an essential role in keeping Stacy relaxed during the delivery.
“She touched Kelsey before I did. She put her on my stomach and let me see that she had 10 fingers and 10 toes,” Stacy told KSL.
The birth was unforgettable for West.
“I remembered Kelsey’s birth because I had never experienced labor like this, before or since,” West recalled. “She really is a miracle.”
Although West never imagined seeing that baby again, 22 years later she discovered their interaction was fate.
West’s son, Tyler, met Stacy’s daughter, Kelsey, at a bank — and the pair instantly hit it off.
When their families first got together, Kelsey felt a familiar feeling about her now-mother-in-law but couldn’t put a finger on it.
“She looked familiar, but I wasn’t sure if it was her, or not,” Kelsey said.
After they got engaged, the couple started to prepare for their wedding. They came across Kelsey’s baby photo album and landed on a page with the nurse inking Kelsey’s foot as a newborn.
Stacy chimed in, “I turned to [Tyler] and said, ‘That looks like your mom. Is that your mom?’”
To confirm her speculation, “We looked at the certificate with the footprints and there was a signature. I asked Tyler if that was his mom’s handwriting, and he said that it was definitely his mom’s handwriting.”
The family was shocked, but “it really does feel like it was meant to be,” gushed West.
The couple, who got married last month, walked into their marriage without a doubt in the world surrounded by loved ones.
“It was one of those things that confirmed to me that Tyler was someone I wanted to be with for the rest of my life, and it also made me feel closer to his mom and his family,” Kelsey said.
