I was invited for dinner at a friend’s house — and got billed the next day

Emily Post would never.

The Internet is writhing over a dinner guest who claims they were charged to attend a dinner party after the fact — despite bringing gifts as “a gesture of goodwill.”

Our tale begins shortly after Christmas when the United Kingdom-based Reddit user Kfcdeliveryguy12234 quipped about the unexpected, £13.70 (or $17.29) post-meal charge.

“It was through a mutual friend. So I had not met or knew the hosts. But I am good friends with the mutual. Anyway, I gave them chocolate as a gesture of goodwill since they were hosting (cost £12). I believe that was the right thing, either that or wine,” the perplexed guest wrote.

“But anyway then today I got asked to pay for £13.70. I am confused.”

At first, the Reddit user wasn’t planning to come, but the mutual friend, showing group messages and all, insisted that they were welcome.

“They said they (the hosts) had already bought the food as well. The food was nice. I appreciate the gesture. But asking to then pay after? I was not made aware of this.”

The anonymous poster then added “for context” that they hadn’t confirmed whether the three additional dinner guests were charged, and wondered whether the decision to split the cost was made after the dinner took place.

Very quickly, other users chewed out the seemingly less-than-gracious hosts.

“That’s so rude,” one commented. “If there’s an expectation that people are going to chip in financially then that needs to be clear ahead of time.”

“Definitely not okay to retroactively impose conditions on your attendance,” wrote a fellow user.

“Send an invoice for the chocolates,” added another.

The hosts’ seemingly poor taste joins a recent trend of dinner guests getting billed for gracing with their presence.

Over Christmas, there were reports of a grandmother who charged her family for the holiday dinner — and adjusted the price higher due to inflation as well.

A mom also charged $200 for a seat at her Christmas meal, too.

Meanwhile, another matriarch is likely sympathetic to the Reddit user as she was also surprisingly billed for a dinner party last Fall as well.
