A cleaning influencer has been advised to attend “therapy” after revealing that she washes her artificial Christmas tree in her bathtub.
A video, which has amassed 2 million views on TikTok, shows the squeaky-clean content creator, known only as Rhema, disassembling her synthetic evergreen piece by piece before placing it in the tub.
First, Rhema gives the yuletide conifer a preliminary spritz with a pink spray, before filling the tub with Dawn dish detergent and water.
The TikTokker then completes her plastic pine tree power wash by running water over the branches.
The final portion of the video shows Rhema reassembling the tree in her living room in preparation for decorating and presents.
However, the hack had TikTok tree-ditionalists telling Rhema to fir-get about cleaning an artificial tree.
“Some people have so much time!” griped one viewer, while another wrote: “CleanTok is getting outta hand.”
“The water being clear told me I don’t need to do this,” said a third.
“Therapy can tackle this I’m sure,” an additional commentator claimed.
“Do you also wash your electronics?” snarked a separate critic, to which Rhema responded, “Is my tree an electronic?”
A lot of commenters accused the social media maven of “performative cleaning,” whereby one attempts to garner online eyeballs by showcasing outlandish hacks they’d never actually use in real life.
Interestingly, artificial tree cleaning is not completely unheard of. Home Improvement site The Spruce even lists tips for cleaning your conifer in an indoor shower.
First, they advise covering the drain of a shower or tub “with a piece of fine mesh to catch any needles that may fall off and clog the drain.”
Then, they advocate disassembling the tree and placing it piecemeal in the shower, in a method not dissimilar from Rhema’s.
They author advises running lukewarm water over the plastic branches without any detergent. Finally, the user shakes dry each section of the tree before reassembling the tree.
The site also provides more orthodox artificial tree-cleaning solutions, including lightly vacuuming and dusting the branches.
