Can true love be this taboo?
Ana Parra and her partner Daniel share two children — as well as 25% of their DNA.
The Spanish half-siblings only just met a little over five years ago, and despite the awkward circumstances, it was love at first sight, the couple described.
Ana, whose father abandoned her when she was a child, admitted that coming to terms with her feelings was initially very difficult.
“We didn’t want to realize it,” Ana previously told Spanish media, according to Newsflash.
“We were angry with ourselves because it was hard to admit and break that taboo,” she continued. “We are siblings even though we didn’t feel that way.”
Ana, who tracked Daniel down on Facebook, confessed feeling “somewhat ashamed” the first time she and half-brother kissed, which led to them dating in secret.
Said Daniel, “That kiss broke all barriers, marked a before and after. It was like a reality check. Imagine liking a girl and, for a moral reason, being forbidden to be with her. It’s really hard to deal with.”
A trip to London together inspired them to share their relationship with the world.
“That was the first time we can say that we behaved, in public, like a real couple,” Ana recalled. “We went out to dinner, we took walks. It was like an explosion of freedom.”
Eventually, they decided to share their relationship with the world in a televised interview — but the world was evidently not ready for their truth, and the couple suffered an onslaught of abuse from strangers following their debut.
“We didn’t feel like telling everyone our story one by one, so that’s why we decided to tell it this way,” Ana explained. “[But] there are people who have written to us on social media telling us that we’re going to burn in hell.”
Despite the severe reaction from the general public, the pair have remained steadfastly devoted to each other and their two children, Daniella and Hector — whom Ana assures are “perfectly healthy,” despite the risk of disease due to their parents’ genetic ties.
The children know their parents are half-siblings, although haven’t fully grasped what that means.
“They’re still very young and don’t understand,” Ana explained to local media.
In Spain, marriage between direct relatives is banned, although consensual incest is not a crime.
Ana and Daniel have said they are determined to make their relationship official and get married, and now desperately fighting to change the law.
“Societies must advance and not cling to traditionalism,” Ana said.
“We love each other and that is what should prevail. We are not harming anyone,” she insisted. “That is why we want people to know our story.”
