Midtown is about to get a lot more cinematic.
Eight months after announcing his seven-concert Radio City Music Hall residency, Joe Hisaishi will kick off his Big Apple stint next week with with MasterVoices and Orchestra of St. Luke’s.
The septet of shows are scheduled to take place:

According to the 75-year-old’s Instagram, he’ll be “performing the music of Studio Ghibli classics, plus scores from Takeshi Kitano, Isao Takahata, and more.”
That was certainly the case for his recent Hollywood Bowl ‘Film Music Concert’ on July 22.
Set List FM reported that the decorated 75-year-old Nagano native performed 24 songs from works as varied as “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Princess Mononoke,” “Ponyo,” “The Boy and the Heron,” and, of course “Spirited Away,” “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service.”
“Hearing [Hisaishi’s score] performed live by the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl was a reminder of just how timeless [his songs] are,” We Live Entertainment reported in a review of the show.
“His music effortlessly blends lush symphonic writing with minimalist influences, creating melodies that linger long after the concert is over…even removed from the films they accompany, his music remains every bit as magical.”

On July 24, Joe Hisaishi released “Symphony No. 3 (Metaphysica) & Harp Concerto.”
It’s a jubilant, glorious, self-controlled yet bustling masterpiece that just might inspire you to start air composing along with the music.
Start at the beginning and you’ll be floored by the magical, busy “Symphony No. 3 ‘Metaphysica’: I. existence” that will have you feel like you’re floating on air.
Shortly after, your ears will be treated to the mournful “where are we going?,” in-your face, beguiling epic “substance,” dreamlike and slightly anxiety-inducing (in a good way!) “Harp Concerto: Movement 1,” measured, beautiful “Harp Concerto: Movement 2” and, finally, the harsh but somehow gorgeous “Harp Concerto: Movement 3.”
There’s a lot at odds here yet this complex album never feels like anything but a cohesive vision.
