This wedding dress mess is so frock’ed up.
Just before saying “I do” to the man of her dreams, a bummed out bride-to-be found herself in a living nightmare after her fiancé sneakily exchanged her bridal gown for a “creepy” dress his mother wanted her to wear on their big day instead.
“[Am I The A—hole] for my reaction when I learned that my fiance returned my wedding dress and replaced it with the one his mom picked for me?,” a 28-year-old woman posed to Reddit’s trending “AITA” thread — a digital confessional booth where contrite-stricken folks seek solace from virtual strangers.
“His mom is the intrusive type but she’s nice overall and we….somewhat get along,” added the would-be bride ahead of her December 2022 nuptials. “I hate to admit that wedding planning has been an absolute nightmare. His mom wasn’t willing to agree on most things, and my fiancé said that since he’s her only son… I should respect and appreciate this ‘vision’ she has for the wedding and how it should be.”
But the head-butting women were both left seeing red when it came time to purchase the gown.
“She insisted to come along for wedding dress shopping,” bemoaned the bride of her future in-law. “I took her with me and my mom and friends. I was so lucky to have found what I was looking for — but she picked a dress that she liked so much and said, ‘She always pictured her son’s bride in it.’”
Creeped out by her mother-in-law’s unsolicited insight, the soon-to-be Mrs. claimed she politely dismissed the imposition.
“I thought the dress was somewhat creepy and toooootally not my type,” she wrote. “I apologized and thanked her for her ‘vision’ but told her that I’d already decided on a dress that I had ‘envisioned’ myself wearing at my wedding!”
However, rather than respecting the bride’s wishes, her groom’s meddling mama ignited the flames of pre-wedding drama.
“She got all pissy because of it apparently, then must’ve told my fiance because he came home in the evening ranting about how I made his mom upset and ‘turned down’ her help in choosing the wedding dress and excluded her from the process,” said the woman.
“I asked ‘what process?,’” she continued, noting that she paid for the all-white ensemble. “Duh, it’s just a wedding dress…my wedding dress so I really didn’t get how she should get a say at all!.”
“He said that I should consider the dress his mom wanted me to buy,” she added, “especially knowing that ‘both dresses weren’t that much different anyway’ like she said but I told him yes they were different…like so much different.”
The ballsy bride’s refusal to back down left the overgrown mama’s boy fuming — so he took matters into his own hands.
“I came home and found out that he had returned my wedding dress and replaced it with the one his mom wanted,” wrote the blindsided fiancée.
“I called him and he was straightforward about what he did and why he did it. I lost it and started screaming at him. He asked me to calm down and really give this dress ‘a chance,’” she said. “I refused to even listen I screamed at him without giving him a chance to speak.”
Contention between the quarreling couple escalated, prompting the bride-to-be to leave their shared space and stay with a friend.
But her shortsighted sweetie remained adamant that his mommy knew best.
“He kept calling and calling then texting saying that I overreacted and it’s his wedding too, so it wasn’t cool how I screamed at him,” she wrote. “He insisted I give this dress a chance. He went on and on about how his mom has a ‘vision’ and good intentions and just wants what best for me as her future daughter in-law.”
And much to the bride’s chagrin, her own father sided with the groom’s mother.
“[My] Mom is livid and has been wanting to go scream at him and his mom,” she confessed, “but my dad said that this isn’t worth ruining my relationship with my in-laws.”
“He suggested I wisen up and ‘go with the flow’,” added the conflicted woman. “But is it too much for me to be able to pick my own wedding dress without being guilted about it just to keep the peace?. AITA for my reaction?.”
But social media spectators swiftly assured the betrayed bride-to-be that she wasn’t being a donkey’s butt.
“[You’re not the a- -hole]. Call off the wedding …Take his suit back and exchange it for a clown outfit,” wrote an outraged Reddit reader.
“Maybe his mom could wear [the dress] to the wedding and stand in for you,” penned an equally peeved viewer.
“He doesn’t want to marry you, he wants to marry his mom,” added another. “So it’s easier for him if you’re just a blank paper doll she can project herself onto. You’re going to be a surrogate for THEIR children if you go through with this.”
Unfortunately for this bullied bride isn’t the only one who’s had to stand up for herself against a monstrous mother-in-law prior to the nuptials.
In February, a woman reportedly busted her hubby-to-be getting breastfed by his mother on their wedding day. That same month, a bride named Jasmine Hopper racked up over 6.2 million TikTok views on footage of her “toxic” mother-in-law sporting a white dress that was nearly identical to her wedding gown.
“I can’t even put into words how embarrassed I am now that my mother-in-law wore the same dress as me on my wedding day. It hurts my soul,” said Hopper in her since-deleted post. “All I can think about when I think about my wedding is the dumb bitch who had my dress on.”
