This new mom got a rude awakening from her in-laws.
One mother discovered her newborn no longer had the name she chose, two months after giving birth.
While recovering from an emergency C-section, her husband decided to change the spelling of the baby’s middle name to a “more masculine” spelling because his mom told him to, she revealed in Slate’s advice column.
“Apparently, his mother guilt-tripped him into doing this…Keep in mind she lives a few states away, so this was all over the phone,” the disgruntled mother said.
The new parents agreed their son’s middle name would be “Finlay” but spelled with an “e.”
However, her mother-in-law didn’t think the name suited her grandson. “She thinks that ‘Finlay’ is more masculine than ‘Finley.’”
The mother-in-law decided to take matters into her own hands by manipulating her son to change the spelling.
Initially, she wanted to change the newborn’s first name.
“She tried to convince him to give our son a first name that I very much hated, saying that I would ‘get mad, but get over it,’” she added.
Surprisingly the momma’s boy had enough courage to decline his mother’s suggestion but “gave into the spelling his mom wanted for the middle name.”
To not upset his wife, he hid the birth certificate and social security card, but eventually, she found the documents and was irate for months.
“He just let me keep believing for two months that our son’s middle name was spelled Finley when it legally isn’t!”
The couple is “working things out” and plans to change the baby’s middle name to the spelling they originally agreed on.
The mother mentioned her husband “felt bad as soon as he did it, which is why he hid the documents.”
While they work on rebuilding their happy home, the new mom has no plans to rekindle a relationship with her toxic mother-in-law.
“His mother even sent a Christmas gift to middle name ‘Finlay,’ and when I made a comment to my husband he didn’t even have the decency to tell me,” she fumed.
Many people were appalled by the toxic behavior of her husband and mother-in-law.
“What in the entire f-k is up with your husband?” one person commented beneath Slate’s column. “He can’t be trusted.”
“I would get revenge by never seeing her again and filling out birthday and Christmas cards with your son’s full name spelled the way you like it,” suggested another.
“He betrayed you while you were in recovery, sided with his manipulative mother after one phone call, lied to you for months and gaslit you,” scorned one person. “You need to watch this man.”
