Roger Goodell stands by Bad Bunny Super Bowl halftime decision after Trump called it ‘absolutely ridiculous’

Roger Goodell believes Bad Bunny’s upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance is going to be an “exciting and a united moment.”

Speaking Wednesday at the Fall League Meeting in New York, the NFL commissioner addressed the controversy that has swirled around the decision to host the Puerto Rican superstar on the game’s biggest stage next February in Santa Clara, Calif.

“It’s carefully thought through,” Goodell said. “I’m not sure we’ve ever selected an artist where we didn’t have some blowback or criticism. It’s pretty hard to do when you have literally hundreds of millions of people that are watching.”

Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, was tapped to perform at Super Bowl LX back in September. In the wake of the announcement, some pundits and politicians railed against the decision, including President Donald Trump, who called the move “absolutely ridiculous.”

For those tuning in on game day, Goodell trusts they’re in for a “great show.”

“We’re confident it’s going to be a great show,” the commissioner said. “He understands the platform that he’s on, and I think it’s going to be exciting and a united moment.”

A three-time Grammy winner, Bad Bunny has been critical of Trump and previously opened up about not bringing tour stops to the U.S., expressing concern over the possibility of Immigration and Customs Enforcement being present at shows.

“There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the U.S., and none of them were out of hate — I’ve performed there many times,” he told i-D in an interview published last month.

“… But there was the issue of — like, f–king ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”
