September 2023 horoscopes: Fight to persevere through a record of retrogrades

Polish your silver, double check your punctuation and pluck your chin hairs my babies, Virgo season hath arrived.

The reason Virgo gets such a bad wrap for being a detail oriented perfectionist is because this sign fundamentally understands, and can clearly see the potential in all things.

Cue Virgo Queen Beyoncé heralding her astrological season with a birthday wish/royal decree that fans wear silver to her next string of shows so as to mirror joy to one another and generally mimic the star light effect of a disco ball. Virgos, here to art direct us all into excellence.

This month we’re dealing with a record six pack of planets in retrograde including Mercury and Venus.

On September 4 Jupiter, the drunk uncle planet of fortune, abundance and miracles will station retrograde in the fixed pastures of Taurus where it shall remain until December 30.

Jupiter retrograde does not translate to our luck running out but rather our concept of fortune being rewritten. Before we can ask for what want, or for more of it, we have to define it. Mercury’s retrograde in Virgo, if we allow its intercession, can help us get there.

In the words of Virg-bro poet, scientist and playwright Goethe, “Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.”

For most of the month, Mars, the planet of f–king and fighting, duels and drag racing will be in the balance seeking, conflict averse sign of Libra. Mars is considered in fall in Libra, meaning it is unable to fully express itself.

Under this diplomatic influence we are inclined to settle when we should persevere and couple up to codependence rather than cut loose with autonomous abandon. I know winter is coming but commit with caution and to your own selves be true my dudes! The upswing of Mars in Libra is that it has us prioritizing measured calm and reflection over quick and cutting reactions, a wonderful tool to employ during this season of retrogrades

The end of Mercury’s retrograde coincides with the new moon in Virgo on September 14. As the astrological calendar begins with Aries, Virgo season is the mid-year review. Where have we been and where are we going. Virgo is mutable earth, bridging the gap between summer and autumn it simultaneously collects as it prepares.

On September 21, the fall equinox arrives putting an end to the long days of summer and beginning the slow march of gathering shadows and the procession towards winter. Two days later, on the 23rd, the hallowed birthday of Bruce “The Boss” Springsteen, the sun moves into Libra where it will shine its light on the progress we’ve made towards balancing structure and surrender. The month closes out with a full Harvest Moon in hair on fire Aries on September 29.

Your September horoscopes can be found below. Make sure and read for both your sun and rising signs.

As the first sign in the zodiac Aries, you never fail or flail in your pursuit of achievement and advancement. Living as you do in a perpetual state of burning you know how to get ahead but you often struggle to turn it down. Virgo season, and particularly this retrograde are insisting that you slow your roll. Virgo rules the sixth house of service and labor and hard as it may be to hear, rest is actually a component of work and when honored can operate like an accelerant, a mushroom style Super Mario boost. Sometimes, you must pause in order to progress. Trust that if you push on you risk not only burn out, but burning bridges.

Blessed be thy high thread count bedsheets, Taurus. Venus, your planetary ruler FINALLY goes direct in the first week of September though a healthy handful of other planets are still doing the backstroke this month. Among them is Uranus, planet of upheaval and inspiration which is retrograding in your sign and in your first house of the self. You are very much a creature of habit but there’s a fine line between comfort and complacency and Uranus will see to it that you know the difference and proceed/reimagine/break the muthaf—in mold accordingly.

Ruled as you are by coyote trickster Mercury, this retrograde might hit hard for you Gemini. During the dog days of this transit hold tight to the knowledge that even minimal progress counts as a step forward. For you, it matters less where you’re going and more that you keep going, the journey will inevitably reveal the destination.

Mercury retrograde is going down in your third house of communication, Cancer. You tend to be careful with your words but caution and compassion are needed now more than ever. On the flip side, retrogrades are times to revise and revisit so you may have the chance to return to a conversation that went south earlier this summer or clarify terms with a partner; romantic, platonic, professional or otherwise. Look alive and channel the Virgo super power of discernment when ghosts, exes and excommunicated friends and foes come begging for an audience with you. Be a benevolent god with unbreakable boundaries.

You’ve been put the ringer this summer, Leo.Venus retrograding in your sign called forth questions of wealth and worth and now Mercury retrograde is backpedaling in your second house of finances and self esteem. Repairing your self-concept and your relationship to deserving frees you up for a pay day and a glow up. Remember, money, like everything else, is simply energy and how it shows up in your life (or doesn’t) is directly related to your view of it. Are you coming from a place of scarcity or clarity? Hunger or hope?

With Mercury, your planetary ruler retrograde for the first half of the month your birthday season likely feels less than blessed, Virgo. Trust that whatever complication or calamity comes your way is secretly conspiring for your ultimate benefit. You have incredible vision Virgo, but you oft struggle to trust in what you cannot see and lean into what you can’t control. The world waits to see what earth born magic you will make from the mess this month brings.

With action planet Mars and the South Node in your sign this month, Libra your charming habit of sweeping everything, including your own fears and feelings under the rug will no longer cut it. You don’t need a broom my babies but rather a sifter to sort the past and its issues into what can be learned from and what can be worked through. To address it to progress!

You Scorpio are preternaturally poised to weather all manner of retrogrades. Be it reversals of fortune or the slowing down of planets, you understand it all to be part of a greater cycle of release and renewal. That being said, now is a time that warrants going deep, going in and going underground, especially as we approach the equinox on September 21. You are the sign of secrets and I wonder what mysteries of the self you might encounter in the quiet, what you may cut away and what you might yet clear the ground for.

Jupiter, your planetary ruler, stations retrograde this month Sagittarius. This doesn’t mean you’ll be any less lucky but it could translate to a more muted, less swashbuckling season for you. Think of a retrograde as what it is, a slowing down, and adopt a similar pace. Make progress without pushing. Take care of your animal body and take time to investigate where you’re going and whether that trail is truly one you want to blaze. Plot your course now so that you are ready when the winds of fortune come a billowing back to your sails later this year.

Mercury’s retrograde really puts a hitch in your giddy up, Capricorn. Compromising your sacred covenant of efficiency and forward momentum, this backslide forces you to recalibrate your output and cut other people a little slack. Surrender is not your usual modality but remember that done always beats perfect and enough is a sliding scale.

Pisces, you may be reminded of romantic traumas and heart aches during this time.

Mercury’s retrograde is knocking on the door of your eighth house of sex, death, secrets and fishy finances, Aquarius. You’re more of a space cowboy than a feet on the ground pragmatist but this retrograde calls you to account for both buried treasure and carnal conquests. Find your money and your mojo and be ready to let go of and get loose from any attachments that are preventing the rich soil of your spirit from turning compost to wildflower.

Ahoy my fish friends, you’ve got the coyote planet of communion stationed retrograde in your seventh house of partnerships. This transit is less about evaluating what you need in a relationship and more about recognizing how f—-ing astonishing you are all by yourself, Pisces. You may be reminded of romantic traumas and heart aches during this time. Trust that the objective is not to pine but rather to appreciate the strides you have made, habits you have shed and independence you have found.
