Tonight’s full moon will have you thinking pink.
Like Nick Drake sang, and Volkswagen emotionally leveraged, a “pink moon” is on its way folks and it’s shining in the relationship centric, aesthetically sensitive, charm as a weapon sign of Libra.
What a sight to see.
This “pink moon,” otherwise known as the first full moon of the spring season, will reach its peak on Thursday April 6, 2023 at 12:35 a.m. EST.
Full moons point to zodiac polarities as the sign the full moon falls in is always in opposition to the sign the sun is shining through.
The full moon occurs when the moon is directly opposite the sun in its orbit around Earth. Spiritually speaking, that opposition — between yin and yang, light and dark — makes for a potent time for surrender and a heightened sense of emotionality. As such, full moons are synonymous with closure and culminations.
During this lunation, the full moon in diplomatic, Venus ruled, people pleasing, pretty on purpose Libra is opposing the sun, Jupiter and Chiron all three of which are currently positioned in the active id, baptism by fire, sex, war and winning sign of Aries.
In regards to this polarity, Aries is about the self and Libra is concerned with partnership. These two signs are respectively ruled by the divine feminine (Venus) and the archetypal masculine, (Mars). Libra want peace at all costs and Aries wants progress at any price.
While these two cardinal energies are opposites, they also feed each other; as air lends fire logic and fire moves air to action. This is the axis of identity, between balance and boldness, radical individuation and receptive collaboration.
Rogue writer and activist Dorothy Allison, who embodies the polarity of this week’s lunation with her own Aries sun and Libra moon, challenges/charges, “Come at me as if I were worth your life – the life we make together. Take me like a turtle whose shell must be cracked, whose heart is ice, who needs your heat. Love me like a warrior, sweat up to your earlobes and all your hope between your teeth. Love me so I know I am at least as important as anything you have ever wanted.”
There you have it, complete with earlobe sweat, turtle shells and bald desire my dudes. Allison’s words stand as a burning invitation to move with the sure, clean purpose of fire towards the highest communion of air.
Pink Moon meaning
Despite the moniker, the moon will not actually appear pink to the eye of the beholder. Neigh, the first full moon of spring is named for the seasonal return of the ground phlox, a sprawling, butterfly baiting wildflower also known as the creeping phlox, moss phlox or moss pink, from which this full moon gets its name.
Adding to the pastel, fertility positive word association, this moon is also known as the sprouting grass moon, the egg moon, and among coastal tribes the fish moon, as this was the time shad species swam upstream to spawn.
In all of these names we see the insistent push of new life and the promise of abundance to come. It’s an open call to compost lingering emotional bulls–t, cut loose energy siphons and make room for what wants to sprout up.
As a result of the full moon shining in a cardinal sign, these are the folks that will be feeling the effects of the lunation most acutely, looking at you Libra, Capricorn, Aries and Cancer. If you fall under these stars as sun, moon or rising take extra good care of yourself in the coming days and if you love someone with these placements, be gentle with them, tread lightly, forgive easily, offer affection often.
