This common beauty item landed my dog in the hospital — I had no idea I’d put her in danger

This pooch was all tied up.

A family was “horrified” to learn their beloved pup had swallowed more than 50 elastic hair ties, which required surgery to remove.

“We knew she chewed and occasionally swallowed hairbands — as they came out the other end,” owner Victoria Northwood, 50, told South West News Service

“But we were horrified when we realized she had so many lodged in her stomach, and we are definitely going to be more vigilant from now on!”

When Ham, a 2-year-old pug, was not her usual, rambunctious self during the holidays last month, UK resident Northwood knew something was wrong.

Ham, named after the English soccer team West Ham United FC, would usually spend her days barking at passersby out the window but had become suspiciously quiet, prompting a trip to the vet.

Northwood was “unprepared” for the sheer number of hair elastics the surgeon would extract from Ham’s belly after the doctors saw something “strange” in her abdomen.

Utterly surprised, they pulled an estimated 50 to 60 hairbands out of poor Ham.

Thankfully, the pug has snapped back in recovery and is “causing mischief at home” again — although her owners have their fingers crossed she won’t consume any more hair ties.

“We are keeping a much closer eye on her from now on,” Northwood said. “It’s a relief she is OK!”

Canines are prone to swallowing common household items and requiring emergency procedures — just take Molly the Bernedoodle, who choked down a bundle of socks, or a French bulldog that shockingly wolfed down nearly a dozen rubber ducks last year.

But some dogs have escaped their mischievous munchies unscathed — at the expense of their owners.

Earlier this month, a bewildered couple was forced to sift through their pet’s feces to fetch tiny pieces of dollar bills after their pup snacked on $4,000 in cash.

Meanwhile, a Boston-based bad dog chewed up his owners’ passports just days ahead of their destination wedding.
